I
guess I've always been a bit of a romantic about Scotland. It has
a character that I hope to witness for myself someday. My
Grandmother was a MacLean, hence the name of the company. Her
voice had a lilt and life that is still in my memory. I came
across a photo of the Castle MacLean at Duart had to have a try at
putting down on paper. My Grandfather was pure English. He
was born in 1868, the same year that saw the building of the clipper
ship Cutty Sark. gramps joined the English navy at the age of
eleven. He left the navy when he was sixteen due to injury and
signed on with the British merchant marine. He sailed both oceans
with one trip in 1892 from London to Sydney To San Franciso the back to
England. Working with some of his stories I attempted to
capture the feeling of open sea sailing in a 'barky.'
While the ship
is an
interpretation of The Count Of Flint that made the described voyage the
storm is based on the two or three that our troop ship went through
going to Japan in the
50's.
